Charge Backs Occur . . .
when a customer disputes his or her credit card statement. You can lose compensation for the sale if you don't have physical proof that a card was present at the point of purchase. If the electronic POS system can't read the magnetic stripe, you need an imprint to prove that the charge is valid. If you key the card information in, (which happens 4% to 7% of the time) you must obtain physical proof. If a customer disputes the charge and you don't have proof, you lose. The money is "charged back" to the business and you are not paid for the transaction, yet the customer keeps the goods. Imprinters are the least expensive insurance you can get to prevent keyed-in charge backs. Bottom line - an imprint of the card guarantees that you'll be paid for every transaction.
